Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was born in Italy on February 15th 1564. He was the oldest out of six children to Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia Ammannati. He started studying medicine at University of Pisa in 1583. Unfortunately, he could not finish his degree because he had financial difficulties in 1585. Nevertheless, his role was so significant that he was called “The Father of Modern Science”.

While almost becoming a professor, he left the university and continued studying mathematics. He supported himself by teaching in minor position. At the same time, he started studying objects in motion and published The Little Balance. As a result, he got a teaching post at the University of Pisa in 1589. His contract ended in 1592, as it was no renewed. Not long after, he started a new position at the University of Padua. He taught geometry, mechanics, and astronomy. In 1604, he built his own telescope and found evidence about the Copernican Theory. As it contradicted the established order set by the Catholic Church, Galileo was told not to “hold, teach, or defend in any manner” the Copernican Theory. He obeyed for seven years. However, he was threatened with torture later, and he admitted to supporting the Copernican Theory. Due to this evidence of his heresy, he was kept under house arrest.

Spending the remaining time of his life under house arrest, he wrote Two New Sciences which was published in Holland in 1638. He died from fever and heart palpitations on January 8th, 1642..
